How To Replace Your Garage Door Window Glass

Before getting started with your window replacement, ensure you take all of the necessary safety precautions. To avoid injury, use extreme caution in handling glass window panes. When the window frame is removed, it may expose the steel edges of the door, which can be sharp. Avoid contact with these steel edges. Always wear safety glasses and gloves when completing this or any garage door repairs.

Here are some steps for replacing the glass in your garage door window:

  1. Review the list of DIY-friendly garage door models to ensure you can safely replace the window inserts without professional assistance.
  2. As someone holds the outside window frame, unfasten the screws on the inside retainer.
  3. Remove the window insert retainer from the garage door.
  4. If there is broken glass, carefully remove all pieces of broken glass from the window frame.
  5. Dispose of the broken glass responsibly.
  6. Use sandpaper to smooth any rough edges you find in the window.
  7. Insert the new glass panes into the retainer.
  8. With someone holding the outside window frame again, fasten the screws back into the inside retainer to secure the glass.

If the window has trim, you'll need to carefully remove the trim from the window so that you don't break it before inserting the new glass. After prying the trim from the window, the next step is to remove the nails and any broken glass from the trim. Smooth down the rough edges with sandpaper, then place the new pane of glass into the window opening. After the glass pane is in place, put caulking around every side to secure it and nail the trim back into place.

What Are the Benefits of Garage Door Window Inserts?

What Are the Benefits of Garage Door Window Inserts?

If you're replacing your garage door, you might wonder if there are any benefits to having windows on your garage door. With that in mind, here are some benefits you can expect with window inserts in your garage door.

Natural Light

Natural light is helpful whether you're working in the garage, looking for an item in storage or bringing in the groceries. Opening the garage door to let the light in can expose the contents of your garage, while overhead lighting can prove harsh.

In contrast, windows offer the right amount of soft, natural light without providing a full view of the inside of your garage. If you’re concerned about security, you can also select tinted, frosted, mirrored, laminate or acrylic windows, allowing light in while obscuring any view from the outside.

Curb Appeal

Windows add an extra splash of style to your garage door that can boost your curb appeal. Enhancing your curb appeal helps you take pride in your house, knowing that other people admire its exterior. It also has practical benefits! Curb appeal can significantly increase your home's resale value.
